Selected Verizon featurephones to receive Outdoor and Fitness GPS apps from Trimble

Verizon Wireless and Trimble have announced plans to launch some outdoor and fitness GPS apps on certain of Big Red's featurephones. The apps- AllSport GPS, Geocache Navigator and Trimble Outdoors-will be available for models like the Samsung Alias 2, the Samsung Convoy and the Nokia 7705 Twist.

Designed for those who like to exercise outside, the apps work with the handset's GPS to display maps, stats and navigation useful for a number of outdoor events like running, walking, cycling, backpacking and geocaching. The latter is a relatively new sport that combines treasure-hunting with high-tech navigation.

The AllSport GPS app allows the user to track a workout including walks, runs, bike rides and more directly from a handset. 20 stats are collected including calories burned, miles and speed. The results can be analyzed and shared on AllSports.com and on Facebook.

Geocache Navigator allows Verizon Wireless customers to find 1.2 million treasures hidden around the world and as close as your local park. The treasures appear on a map or can be found in clues, and other players can report findings to pass around to other players.

Trimble Outdoors is an app to help hikers, bikers and off-road drivers navigate using the software's compass and the phone's GPS. You can track routes on different maps, using pictures and audio clips to mark your journey.

Depending on which phone is being used, Verizon customers can purchase the apps in the carrier's online Media Store, Media Center/Get It Now, V CAST apps or in the Android Market.
